Bailey Burge Honored with Nurse of the Year Award

Bailey BurgeCongratulations to Bailey Burge for being selected as UMC’s Nurse of the Year for 2012. Bailey serves as the night charge nurse in the Burn Unit, and has worked at UMC for four years. She is an RN currently working on her MSN degree, and she is currently at level two on the Nursing Career Ladder.

Bailey is known for being very thorough in her patient care, finding the smallest details that make a difference in the care of critically ill patients. She also spends her own time studying the care of burn patients.

Bailey takes the time to teach new nurses important principles of critical care and wound care; she changed the way orientation is done to new nurses in the Burn Unit because she doesn’t want them to face the challenges she did when learning about wound care. Bailey has made the effort to become and expert in pediatric burns and shares this knowledge with others. She has even done several presentations about the care of pediatric burn patients. Bailey is also one of the newest instructors for Advanced Burn Life Support, a class offered to physicians, nurses and EMS personnel throughout the region.

Bailey is always willing to help out her team; she frequently picks up short shifts and has even volunteered to work shifts on days when the unit was short. She has been an active part of the Burn Unit’s research committee and has presented a poster at a national conference about UMC’s burn picture process. Bailey has also been active on the SWATT team and NIC committee.

Under Bailey’s leadership, the burn night shift has become an outstanding, very knowledgeable team that provides the best care for UMC’s burn patients. Congratulations again to Bailey Burge on her achievement.
