- UMC opens Outpatient Observation Unit on 5 West.
- Unit could speed process of admitting and/or discharge
UMC Health System is pleased to announce the opening of our new 34-bed Outpatient Observation Unit.
This unit is for patients requiring further testing and/or observation before deciding whether the patient either needs to be admitted to the hospital or sent home. Patients may be placed in the observation unit for eight to 24 hours.
Before opening this unit, observation patients were spread throughout the hospital. This usually led to delayed testing and treatments, increased length of stay, shortage of beds and financial loss.
“Opening a dedicated observation unit is an innovative approach to improve the overall management of observation patients,” said Nicole Bitar, Nursing Department Director of the new unit. “This multidisciplinary, streamlined approach will provide cost savings for both patients and the hospital. It will also ensure patients are receiving appropriate care.”
UMC Health System has developed a strong and enduring culture, adhering to the motto Service is Our Passion, our ‘why.’ This sustains UMC as the employer of choice—consistently ranking among the best places to work in Texas by the Best Companies Group – and the provider of choice – ranking among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient experience by HealthGrades.
