Welcome Marisa Calder, Director of Revenue Cycle, Central Business Office
Marisa Calder, Director of Revenue Cycle, was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. But she’s not exactly new to Lubbock. She came to Lubbock briefly to attend Texas Tech her freshman year. When she realized that it wasn’t a good fit for her, she returned home to Fort Worth where she made a life for herself and her three sons – Hunter, Jordan and Carson.
It was shortly after the birth of her first son, that she accepted a part-time position as filing clerk and front desk receptionist at The University of North Texas Health Science Center (where her mother worked). Throughout her career, she has worked in all aspects of revenue cycle, including clinic supervisor and credentialing. She worked at the University of Texas Southwestern as the Billing Manager of the ENT Department and was promoted to Director of Revenue Cycle for all the surgical departments where she managed 120 employees.
She received her associate degree from Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, her bachelor’s degree from Penn Foster College, her Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders and became a Certified Medical Practice Executive through Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). Marisa is currently working on her MBA from The University of Texas at Dallas where she will graduate in May 2020.
A fun fact about Marisa is that she enjoys downtime with her mom and sisters at casinos. The first time she went to Las Vegas, her luck seemed too good to be true. She took $150 and, through a series of slot machines and table games, turned that $150 into a profit of $10,000. It was at the Roulette table with people cheering her on and the black chips mounting up, that she felt she was living a scene straight out of a movie. She was on a roll and she experienced the ideal “Vegas experience”.
Marisa believes if you love taking care of people and are service-oriented, healthcare is the best career for you. It is not only about the work but also about helping people. Marisa enjoys serving in a leadership role where she can coach, mentor, grow and develop people. She believes in being there for her employees and enjoys and appreciates the family environment in the workplace. She is excited to accept the position of Revenue Cycle Director and join the Central Billing Office team. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experiences with the team so that they can accomplish great achievements together. And, she is happy to return to Lubbock with her sons Jordan and Carson. Losing the two-and-a-half-hour commute from her previous job, will give them some more time to explore what the city and the people have to offer.
Marisa’s son, Hunter graduated from Texas Tech’s Rawls College of Business last May with a finance degree and returned home to Fort Worth to work in property management at Lockheed Martin. Jordan is attending junior college this semester and will return to Texas Tech in January to complete his undergraduate studies. Carson began the 6th grade at Christ the King Cathedral Catholic School.
