- UMC is among the first to receive the Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence designation.
- Designation confirms UMC is aligned with stewardship guidelines to provide the best in antimicrobial care.
More than 700,000 people die each year due to antimicrobial resistance infections. UMC Health System is taking steps to help.
UMC recently received the Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence designation from the IDSA (Infectious Diseases Society of America). This designation means we are aligned with national, evidence-based stewardship guidelines to provide the very best antimicrobial care.
“It says to patients that we are using our electronic medical record to the best of our ability,” said Tanis Welch, Antimicrobial Stewardship/Infectious Diseases Pharmacist. “We are using the advancements made in our microbiology lab to the best of our ability to get results faster and to modify therapy as fast as possible. And we have all the core members of the team working diligently to provide the very best antimicrobial care to our patients.”
As a result, we are not giving patients a broad-coverage antibiotic for days at a time. Instead, we narrow therapy quickly, which is beneficial for the patient both short and long term.
Welch described this as a team effort with communication between providers, pharmacy, microbiology lab and infection prevention and control.
Although UMC has had an antimicrobial stewardship committee for close to 5 years, this designation has only been around for about a year—we are among the first to receive it. Originally this was a 3-year goal, but UMC accomplished it in less than half that!
UMC is one of only 25 in the country to receive this designation. View the list of institutions with this designation here: http://bit.ly/2MD8Fte
UMC Health System has developed a strong and enduring culture, adhering to the motto Service is Our Passion, our ‘why.’ This sustains UMC as the employer of choice—consistently ranking among the best places to work in Texas by the Best Companies Group – and the provider of choice – ranking among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient experience by HealthGrades.
