The UMC Health System Laboratory is celebrating the completion of their three-year renovation, which allows for us to meet better meet the needs of patients from around the region.
The UMC Lab services our inpatient areas, the Emergency Center, UMC Southwest Cancer Center, all UMC Physicians clinics, Texas Tech Physicians, and we support regional hospitals’ lab testing needs.
Servicing this large of a capacity is a huge task. UMC Lab, along with our accrediting body, that College of American Pathologists, decided we needed a space that was safer for our team. The Core Lab has also been on a journey to have total lab automation, which warranted a renovation.
The lab was still fully functioning 24/7 during each phase of the renovation. The renovation included:
- A new patient area
- Private phlebotomy draw areas
- New automation machinery
- New tube system for receiving specimen
“We are now prepared for the next 10 years and beyond to take on extra capacity and to take care of every patient,” said Amanda Tijerina, Director of the UMC Lab, “because we don’t only care for Lubbock, we also care for the surrounding counties and Eastern New Mexico. We can now care better for all who choose care at UMC.”
