Karen Mathis has dedicated 40 years of her life to UMC. We are so grateful for her service in our health system! Read below to learn what she loves about UMC and why she continues to work here.
Why did you choose UMC 40 years ago?
My best friend’s sister worked here, and she hired me as a temporary replacement while she was on maternity leave. She never came back, and I never left.
In what capacities have you worked during your time here?
I began in the business office at age 19; after about a year, I transferred to Radiology. I was there for 20 years and learned SO much! In 1998, I transferred to IT and was put on the team that helped implement and support our Cerner products. After 13 years of being there, I came over to Performance Improvement. I now help keep patients safe by managing consent forms for all patients in all areas of the hospital.
What is your favorite UMC memory?
I think one of my most memorable moments here is when I was in IT. A pharmacist had made a mistake in our computer system that affected every employee using the electronic medical record. I was the only person who could help him fix it, and we worked together for several hours to fix the issue in a way that our providers and staff felt minimal impact.
My son was born at UMC almost 36 years ago and has worked here for 15 years—that’s pretty great, too!
What is UMC’s Best Quality?
It’s always going to be our culture and teamwork! The fact that everyone takes pride in the care we provide and that patient will always come first. Knowing I’m a big part of that makes me feel great!
