UMC Ambassador Stories: Carpenter’s Kitchen

Patient · Community · Each Other

Last summer employees in our Supportive Care Unit began volunteering at Carpenter’s Kitchen. They saw this as an opportunity to do a team building activity, but it soon became so much more.

“We were really excited just to be able to reach out to people and serve those in need,” said Cheyenne Vasquez-Garza, a nurse on the unit. “We decided it needed to be a UMC family thing. So we put this on our UMC Broadcast and invited all employees to become involved.”

After placing this on our broadcast system, we went from having about 8 UMC volunteers a month at Carpenter’s Kitchen to 40 or more! We have employees from many different areas: from nursing to the lab to general counsel. They prepare and serve a meal to the homeless here every 3rd Sunday of the month.

“We don’t just provide health care,” Cheyenne said. This is a really great way to show people: if you’re in need, you can come to UMC and we will take care of you regardless.”
