Maricela Chavez, Human Resources Staff Specialist, has been with UMCP almost 14 years. A native of Olton, Texas, she graduated from high school there, where she participated all four years in One-Act Plays, UIL Competition (where she received Honorable Mention for her performance in “The Lottery”), and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) leadership program. After school and on weekends, she worked at United Supermarkets in Plainview as first a sacker, then cashier and to then to the front service counter.
Maricela attended American Commercial College receiving a certification as medical office specialist. She began working in the medical industry as a receptionist and “unofficial” translator at Oasis Medical Clinic in Plainview in 2005. Being the translator hit close to home for Maricela. When her father was only 14 years old, he’d come to the U.S. from Mexico. He spoke no English. She saw the sign of relief on the patients’ faces when they realized she understood them. Maricela was instrumental in communicating between the patients and their providers. A relationship and trust were established among the patients, their providers and Maricela. This was priceless for her.
September 1, 2005, UMC Physicians acquired Oasis Medical Clinic. Eventually Maricela became the referral coordinator and continued her role as unofficial translator. Maricela moved to UMCP’s corporate offices in March 2013 to work as Operations Assistant in the Operations Department. The HR Team recruited her in May 2014 as a HR Staff Assistant handling New Employee Orientation, in-processing of new employees, and employee verification. Throughout her 11 years in HR, she has not shied away from opportunities for advancement, always embracing new challenges and responsibilities. In June of 2017, she was promoted to HR Specialist handling the company payroll, internal audits, the 401K program plus terminations, transfers and annual evaluations. Maricela enjoys meeting people and serving others, and her role in HR allows her to do that every single day. Her Mother always told her, “Kill them with kindness and you will get it in return.” She has found this to be true in her life…what you give is returned to you. In 2016, Maricela received UMCP’s Service Excellence Award. Service is her passion.
Maricela is married to Michael and they have one daughter, Tera. They attend Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Plainview. When she’s not at work, she enjoys spending time with family or enjoying her hobbies which include decorating, crafting, riding bicycles with Tera and reading Christian novels.
