Pediatric patients at the UMC Children’s Hospital will have lots to smile about and will be feeling like it’s Christmas in July, thanks to the generous efforts of a local motorcycle club.
The Dirty Gringos Motorcycle Club is holding their 7th annual Chrome & Crayons Toy Run, benefitting the UMC Children’s Hospital. Each year, they ask other motorcycle clubs to partner with them by buying toys, games, coloring books and other fun items for kids staying in the hospital.
“Many sick kids who live in Lubbock are lifted up by events during the holidays, but there are hundreds of patients throughout the rest of the year at the UMC Children’s Hospital who don’t feel the direct support from the community,” said Shannon “Blind Dog” Bryant, benefit founder of the toy run for the Dirty Gringos. “We hope to fill that void.”
Riders will deliver the toys to children and visit with them and their families at the hospital. Excess toys will be saved by UMC Child Life Specialists for pediatric patients later this year.
“This is always the highlight of our year,” said UMC Child Life Coordinator Sarah Simmons. “No matter how many times we do this, it still always means so much to us! The kids need it.”
