The Art of Choosing

Did you know the UMC Cancer Center has a Risk Assessment and Prevention Program (RAPP)? This program is designed for patients with a higher risk of solid tumors and offers individualized care management strategies that include high risk screening, genetic testing and counseling for families, prophylactic surgeries, and emotional support/counseling for women.

RAPP works with patients at a high risk for breast and/or ovarian cancer to develop a personalized risk management plan. Because each person is different, each plan is different. And the patient decides which management plan best fits them.

Benefits of receiving care at the UMC Risk Assessment and Prevention Program:

  • Patient-centered care focused on both you and your doctors making decisions about your management plan.
  • Expertise from multiple specialty physicians available under one roof at the UMC Cancer Center
  • High-resolution breast screening technologies, including 3-D mammograms (tomosynthesis), breast MRI, and the region’s only full-body MRI
  • Access to research and ability to participate in clinical trials
  • Patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team, made up of experts in breast health including:
    • Imaging
    • Genetics
    • Oncology
    • Surgery
    • Psychology
    • Support Services

Kasey and Shannon Hampton’s mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995. Because of their family history, the Hampton sisters have a higher risk for breast cancer.

Twenty-one years later, Kasey and Shannon decided to take charge of their health. With personalized care and advanced treatment, Texas Tech Physicians and UMC’s Risk Assessment and Prevention Program equipped each of them to make their own preventative choices. The Hampton sisters have chosen different treatment paths, and UMC supports and strengthens them in each choice with the same goal in mind.

Kasey and Shannon choose to be warriors against cancer. Just like their mom.
