A New Class of UMC Heroes

Aug 13th, 2020 | Latest News

Last month, we officially welcomed our first ever class of UMC Emergency Medicine Residents! And we want you to get to know them right here, each month.

James Ko M.D.

Hometown: Petaluma, California

James Ko M.D.

James completed his undergraduate education at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He then worked as a scribe for a few years before beginning medical school at St. Georges University.

He has had his eye on Texas for many years as a great place to live, work and raise a family. He is thrilled by the idea of helping shape the UMC Emergency Medicine Residency program. In addition, he thinks it is a privilege to begin his training an excellent institution under the leadership of passionate attendings and other co-residents.

Ryan Hirata M.D.

Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta; Vancouver, British Columbia

Ryan Hirata M.D.

Ryan split his undergraduate career studying Biology and East Asian Studies. He became involved in Multiple Sclerosis research at ICORD in his last few years of undergrad, which set him on his current path.

He applied to the Emergency Medicine Residency at UMC because he enjoys the promise new programs have: trailblazing the path for future Emergency Medicine physicians. Even before officially beginning his residency, Ryan could tell he “found his people” here at the UMC Emergency Center.

We are glad to have you as a part of our emergency care team, James and Ryan!
