Since 2015, our pediatric oncology patient volume has tripled. In order to accommodate and ensure no pediatric patient was turned away, we brought on more staff to provide each patient with great care.
The old Pediatric Oncology and Hematology space only had 3 rooms dedicated to these patients, and we did not like that! Pediatric patients also did not have a waiting room catered specifically to them--they had to wait in the main lobby with the adult patients. This can be very stressful and not only cause anxiety for the pediatric patients but also for the adult patients.
For this reason we, at UMC, wanted to create a kid-friendly environment for the pediatric patients and their families. We completely re-did the space to make it fun for our children.
The expansion/renovation includes 6 patient rooms dedicated to pediatric patients, a physician/staff work room and a “western” themed waiting room.
Three characters can be found in the patient rooms and the waiting room: Gertie the Grey Fox, Dilly the Armadillo and Pecos the Prairie Dog. Children visiting can now have fun looking for them and playing with toys.
This project was paid for by donor funds. We are thrilled to be able to provide this new experience for our pediatric patients!
