Contributions in Nursing

IMG_9663_EDIT

Nurses play an important role in the quality of health care through their many contributions. Health care is a collaboration based on mutual respect and trust among the team, but the nurse has a unique role in coordinating the total care of the patient and family. The nurse plays a significant role in health promotion and disease prevention, emphasizes care and compassion, and advocates for patients and their families. By continually seeking learning opportunities, the nurse is part of the solution to achieve better patient outcomes and reduce harm.

Explore the many ways UMC nurses contribute both inside and outside of UMC Health System:

DAISY Award

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of an auto-immune disease, at age 33. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere. UMC honors one of our nurses with a DAISY Award each month.

Community Involvement

UMC nurses care deeply for our community, not just inside of the walls of the hospital but also outside of them! Our nurses give their time in so many capacities, from participating in walks to end diseases to serving in soup kitchens and beyond. UMC nurses are true ambassadors.

Presentations

Magnet® nursing leaders value staff nurses and involve them in shaping research-based nursing practice. UMC nurses research the most current evidence to ensure our patients have the best outcomes and to promote quality, identify excellence and disseminate best practices. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Career Ladder Recipients

Our Career Ladder program is a voluntary program recognizing Registered Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses for developing their skills and for their contribution to the improvement of patient care.
