911 Operator: “911-what is your emergency?”
Frantic Parent: “my son fell off his horse and hit his head on a huge rock. he is unconscious and bleeding from his nose. please help-hurry!”
Although the beginning words of this 911 call are ones you never want to make on behalf of your child, we are so blessed to have high-quality teams of providers and staff at umc who know exactly what to do for a child suffering from anything that can be life threatening.
If your child, or a child you know, needs the medical service available to pediatric patients at umc, it is extremely comforting to have the Ronald McDonald Family Room right across the hall from the pediatric icu area. you may need a cup of coffee or a quiet place to talk with family. the ronald mcdonald family room is for families of children undergoing medical treatment and provides:
- Kitchen area that includes a refrigerator, microwave and conventional oven
- Shower facilities
- Laundry facilities
- Complimentary coffee, drinks, and snacks
- Lounge area with TV
In order for this resource to be available to families someone must volunteer to open the room each day and make it available to the families of pediatric patients. Mary Avery and Kim Patterson from TeamChoice have been volunteering on a monthly basis for over ten years to make certain the coffee is made, the facilities are ready for visitors and they’ve even been known to bake a batch of fresh baked cookies!
According to Mary, “Knowing that you have helped a family just by listening to their story is very rewarding and I’m so happy to volunteer at the Family Room.”
“I started volunteering at the Family Room right after I began working at TeamChoice ten years ago. The opportunity to serve patient families is absolutely gratifying,” said Kim.
The Family Room is an extension of Ronald McDonald House Charities and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. RMHC relies on the support of the entire community and greatly values donations from the community and other corporate partners. If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation please call 806-744-8877.
