Welcome to

Volunteering at UMC

Volunteers are a critical part of providing care to our patients everyday. Our volunteers have answered a true calling and help support the hospital staff in the development of better patient care.

In addition to assisting UMC employees in providing great patient care, the objective of every volunteer is to:

  • further community awareness by favorably promoting and speaking about UMC;
  •  provide an opportunity for young people to learn about hospital careers through volunteer placement.
  • serve our patients in the best teaching hospital in the country.

In the past five years there have been 254,219 volunteer hours worked; on average, about 26,000 hours are worked by volunteers every year at UMC.

The UMC Auxiliary Volunteers help raise funds for many things around the hospital. They also give out $11,000 a year in scholarships. Some of the things provided by funds the Auxiliary Volunteers have raised include:

  • Newspapers for every patient, seven days a week.
  • The first shuttle van for employees, patients, and visitors.
  • The opportunity for every child treated in the burn center to attend burn camp during the summer.
  • The opportunity for every child treated for diabetes to attend diabetes camp. Equipment for various departments within the hospital.
  • A gift for every new mom that includes: a book to read to the baby, a t-shirt for the baby, a coupon for use in the gift shop, tips for literacy for their child, and their baby's first library card.

What it Means to Volunteer

Why volunteer?

You learn new things when you volunteer; you help others; you meet new and interesting people; gain experience in the work force and you become part of a wonderful volunteer organization.

Time Commitment

Most volunteers work 4 hours, once a week. With student volunteers, we require at least one semester commitment. Of course you can always volunteer more. We will work with your schedule. The best part of volunteering is that you make your own schedule. If you are out of town or not able to volunteer, we work around your schedule.
