South Plains Emergency Medical Services (SPEMS) Award Recipients

South Plains Emergency Medical Services (SPEMS) is a non-profit organization comprised of 78 organizations, with the goal to reduce mortality and morbidity by addressing and solving medical and trauma-related needs through effective regional coordination of emergency medical services, and in the process, increase the accessibility, consistency and quality of emergency health care provided to the residents of the Texas South Plains.

SPEMS hosts an annual EMS conference offering educational opportunities and an awards luncheon recognizing providers from various sectors of pre-hospital care. In 2019, three UMC EMS staff members were recognized for their contributions to Emergency Medical Services and the communities they serve.

Unsung Hero Award

Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club created the Unsung Heroes Recognition program in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, as a way of honoring and publicly recognizing the dedication and sacrifice made by the fine people who proudly wear the uniform of Lubbock Fire Rescue, Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, UMC EMS and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In 2002, American State Bank and the Lubbock Avalanche Journal joined with Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club in sponsoring the annual event. The individuals from these public safety organizations put their lives on the line for the citizens and visitors in our community each day, with unmatched dedication and a willingness to serve, protect and defend us, our property, and our lives.

The Unsung Heroes program was given this name because their service to our community often goes unnoticed and taken for granted. Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club felt that we sometimes fail to remember to thank those who create the atmosphere of safety and well-being.

This award is given annually to an EMT or paramedic, firefighter, police officer, patrolman and sheriff’s deputy for their sacrifice, dedication and willingness to risk their lives in making Lubbock a safe place to live. Each honoree is selected by their peers in their respective organizations.

Top 50 EMS Professionals

After scoring thousands of Texas medics in the EMS Survey Team system to find the top 50, EMS Survey Team reserved space to honor five UMC medics. EMS Survey Team is an entity that collects and measures the quality of both patient experiences and employee engagement. After being cared for and transported by UMC EMS, patients have an opportunity to fill out a survey, created by EMS Survey Team, about the care received. Top 50 EMS Professionals are selected based on repeated positive results on these surveys.
