Exercise Physiology Internship
UMC Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab enlists up to three student interns each long semester (Spring, Summer & Fall).
Clinical Exercise Internship Program
This is an unpaid internship opportunity working alongside degreed and certified Exercise Specialists/Physiologists in the fields of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Clinical Exercise Testing.
UMC Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab is nationally certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab. This designation ensures that the best service is provided to patients and provides an excellent learning environment for interns to learn.
To meet your program’s hour requirement, students typically complete 20-25 hours per week over the course of the semester.
Throughout this internship, students will gain experience in various aspects of clinical exercise science, including:
- Exercise prescription and individualized programming
- Health evaluations and treatment planning
- Diagnostic exercise testing
- Inpatient/post-surgical ambulation therapy
- Cardiovascular echocardiography
- Health promotion and risk factor education
Interns will also receive foundational training in:
- Electrocardiography
- ACSM and AACVPR clinical guidelines
- Referral workflows and marketing strategies
- The role of physical medicine and rehabilitation within a hospital setting
In addition to clinical exposure, interns will develop valuable professional skills such as:
- Working in a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Using exercise monitoring and data management software
- Engaging with patients from diverse backgrounds
- Understanding Healthcare processes and terminology
Requirements
- Be enrolled in an internship class
- Possess knowledge from course work in exercise prescription, exercise testing, fitness assessment and exercise prescription for special populations
- Positive and encouraging attitude
- CPR certification
- All students must have a negative Tuberculin Skin Test (or negative TB blood test/IGRA if skin test is positive) completed within the previous 12 months
- Fall and Spring candidates must receive a seasonal Flu Vaccination
- Submit schedule and availability to the Intern Coordinator
