Expanding Rehabilitative Care

Aug 13th, 2020 | Latest News

South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of UMC and Encompass Health, has been serving patients with rehabilitation needs in the region for a little over a year now. We have to say, it has been quite the successful year!

Here are some of our successes thus far:

  1. The rehab hospital is performing where we projected it would at four years of being open—particularly in the financial and patient volume.
  2. Readmission rate is 10.22 percent (industry average is 18.6)
  3. Patient Satisfaction is 88.9 percent, putting us in the top 5 percent nationwide!

Currently, our capacity is 40 beds, and our year-to-date average daily census is 38.6. Open beds stay open for hours, rather than days. For this reason, it has been decided that we will expand South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital—adding 26 beds.

“We are excited about what this means four our health system, our patients and our future,” said John Lowe, Director of UMC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “The need is definitely there, and our rehab hospital continues to flourish as an extension of UMC.”

We will break ground on the expansion this quarter, and construction will take about a year.
