Sep 4th, 2020 | Latest News

A Neonatal ICU, or NICU, is a special ICU for newborns. The UMC NICU is a Level IV NICU, the highest designation for NICUs available in Texas. This means we provide the highest level of, and the most acute, care to neonatal patients.

Our NICU team is made up of people from many different specialties:

  • A neonatologist with training in the care of sick and premature babies
  • Sub-specialty pediatric physicians
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
  • Neonatal nurses
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Dietitians
  • Lactation counselors
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech language pathologists
  • Pharmacists
  • Social workers
  • Case Managers
  • Hospital chaplains

Why does our NICU team provide this care? To make a difference in the lives of our babies and their families, both physically and emotionally. We know there is more to care than just what is physically going on with the patient!
