UMC Began Taking Down Flu Alongside Selected Lubbock Residents

UMC was able to give out free flu shots this past weekend to members of the local community in need. Residents who are unfunded, uninsured, or part of the Medicaid population were invited to visit UMC Family Medicine at I-27 Medical Center and receive their free shot curbside.

UMC strives to help the community in every way possible. Amidst everything going on in the world we want to keep the public safe as best we can. Being able to provide residents with a safety measure to fight the flu this season was an opportunity that allowed us to give back to the community we serve. To show our appreciation to the participants we gave out a $50 gas card to all who attended.

“We are dedicated to providing safe, high-quality care to all,” said Bobbye Hrncirik, Vice President Supplemental Funding Programs and Government Relations. “Knowing how to find access to healthcare services is the #1 barrier for many in our community, we wanted to help alleviate that barrier.”

Statistics from last year show that an increased number of flu vaccines were given to the public, and the rate of sickness declined compared to previous years. UMC strives to keep the community safe and healthy, providing a free flu shot to members of the community in need was a step to achieve that goal.

UMC departments will be handing out treats to the children at the UMC Children’s Hospital on Friday, October 29, 2021, in the outdoor garden area between the UMC Main Building and the East Tower.

The Masked Rider, Fearless Champion, TTU Residence Life group and several departments in the hospital will be present, handing out goodies to the children. We plan to host about 30 children staying at UMC Children’s Hospital. “We are excited to host a small Halloween Trick or Treat event for our pediatric patients,” said Erica Allen, Community Outreach Specialist. “We want our pediatric patients to enjoy the Halloween experience, even if they are in the hospital. Kids love Halloween and there is no greater joy than seeing a child’s face light up with excitement. UMC Opens New 24-Hour Urgent Care Center

UMC is excited to announce the opening of our new Urgent Care Clinic to address non-emergent care needs. The clinic is conveniently located on the UMC Campus – Medical Office Plaza II, 808 Joliet Avenue, Suite 110.

Each year, UMC serves over 75,000 patients in our Emergency Center (EC), with over 50% of patients seeking non-emergent care. The new Urgent Care Clinic will allow patients to receive care at lower costs, experience shorter wait times, and receive care from EC-trained providers. The facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Emergency centers focus on treating severe and life-threatening conditions whereas urgent care centers focus on treating urgent and minor emergency patients. Opening the new Urgent Care Clinic will allow UMC to provide our patients with the best possible care in the most efficient, cost-effective way. To help patients better determine when to visit various care sites, some helpful tips have been provided below:

When to visit the Emergency Center:

  • Experiencing major symptoms (head injury, severe eye injury, poisoning, or paralysis)
  • Pain in uncommon areas (chest pain, severe headache, or severe abdominal pain)
  • Uncontrollable bleeding (intestines, or vaginally when pregnant)
  • High fever

When to visit the Urgent Care Clinic:

  • Experiencing minor symptoms (vomiting, cold/flu, or diarrhea)
  • Pain in common areas (earache, sore throat, typical headache, or painful urination)
  • Controllable bleeding (skin, need stitches)
  • Low fever

As we continue to support our community by increasing access to care, we hope to further build upon our foundation of service and our promise to high-quality care.

UMC Hosts Hero Celebration for the Lubbock Health Department

The pandemic has brought on new challenges for the Lubbock community, but our UMC Heroes remain firm, not fearful, and we are not alone in this. The Lubbock Health Department has been fighting with us every step of the way to ensure the safety of the Lubbock community. Which is why UMC hosted a hero celebration for the department, to show our appreciation.

On August 30, UMC provided lunch for the Lubbock Health Department as well as a few words from Mark Funderburk, UMC President and Chief Executive Officer. UMC also gave 45 boxes filled with goodies for each member of the department.

“UMC wanted to recognize all of the Lubbock Health Department employees and let them know we greatly appreciate our partnership,” said Phillip Waldmann, UMC Executive Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer. “They, along with all health care workers, have been at the front lines of the battle for over 18 months and have earned our admiration and appreciation. Together, we served to keep our community safe and wanted the Health Department to take part in a hero celebration.”

The Lubbock Health Department has made a tremendous impact on our community, and we thank you.

UMC and its employees welcome service opportunities not just at the bedside but out in the community as well. UMC has sponsored Brown Elementary, through the Partners in Education program, since 2008.
