Danny Ryan Jobe – Jan 2021 – The Daisy Award

Please help us congratulate Danny Ryan Jobe as our January 2021 DAISY Nurse!

On Oct. 3, 2020 my Daddy, Laroy Hawkins was taken from Trust Point to UMC and placed in Neuro ICU that afternoon and Ryan was our nurse. We as a family were so afraid and frustrated because Daddy had spent 4 weeks at another hospital. From the moment we entered UMC we breathed a sign of relief, we felt like our Daddy mattered. We felt that our Mother was able to understand that as well. We were all fully informed of the dire situation but also assured that aggressive measure would be taken. Ryan was more than our nurse, he cared for our Daddy with every part of his being. He bonded with Daddy because they both served in the Navy. He stood watch over every need that our whole family experienced. He made sure that my grandchildren and son were able to speak to him so he could understand them, and they could understand him. He wrapped his big ole self around my sister and me and cried tears with us. He listened to our stories and laughed with us, all the while teaching a student nurse and caring for other patients. When we were moved to Palliative Care on Oct. 5, his shift ended but his thoughts and prayers did not. He left us a precious note and asked to keep in touch. Daddy went home to Heaven the morning of Oct. 6, 2020. Everyone at the hospital who took part in Daddy’s care was so kind. We failed to contact Ryan of Daddy’s passing. We had a visitation and viewing at Lakeridge Chapel on Oct. 9, 2020. My sister and I were telling our Daddy goodbye for the last time when someone called to us to turn around. And there was Ryan, our dear Ryan with tears in his eyes and arms open for a hug! Nothing and no one else could have loved us as this guy did. So special! He walked us out to the car, the 3 of us the last to leave. We invited him to Mother’s home to have lunch after the service for our Daddy, but he could not get away from his shift at the hospital. Our whole family is grateful for him and have adopted him to our family. I think my Daddy would have been agreeable. When he saw Ryan across the room the day before he passed, he said as good as he could “Well there’s that red headed sailor!” Ryan does not have red hair! This is our story. I pray you consider our choice for this award not for the worldliness of it but for the genuine love and care from the genuine, loving heart of Danny Ryan Jobe. May God continue to bless all who serve at UMC Hospital.

We are proud to honor Danny Ryan Jobe as our January 2021 DAISY Recipient!

Brittney Rosin – December 2020 – Daisy Award

Please help us congratulate Brittney Rosin as our December 2020 DAISY Nurse!

Our family would like to nominate Brittney Rosin for the prestigious Daisy Award because of the incredible care she provided my mom during her last day at the hospital before going home on palliative care. We have had numerous experiences with nurses over the last several years because of our mom’s illness, but we have NEVER had a nurse that touched our hearts like Brittney did! There are nurses that join the profession for the money and prestige, but for Brittney, it is a passion and a calling. It takes a special kind of person with a compassionate personality, a gentle hand, and a loving heart to care for people in their times of need. These are a special set of skills that are only possessed by a select few and Brittney is definitely one of the few. I know the Lord planted seeds of love, kindness, compassion, and empathy deep inside her heart long before she made a commitment to care for others. Because of her compassionate and gentle care, my mother felt comfortable and at ease with her decision to transition home with palliative care. I have never seen a nurse kneel down beside a patient and talk to them like Brittney did with our mom. I am in the field of education and we know the importance of proximity and getting down on a person’s level. Rarely does one see a nurse who understands the importance of this action. The care Brittney gave our mother went far beyond standard nursing! She not only took care of her medical needs, she touched her heart and left a lasting impression we will never forget. Brittney used her personal funds to purchase a Precious Moments lamb she gave my mom her last day at the hospital as well as a balloon with all the nurse’s signatures. As small as this seems, it meant the world to my Mom where it stayed by her side until she passed away at home 4 days later. Even during her last hours, we saw her rubbing the curly fur on the lamb to ease and comfort her as she slept. At my dad’s request, the lamb remains on her bedside pillow today. The balloon Brittney gave her, with all the 5 West nurse’s signatures, is still attached to her nightstand lamp. She talked numerous times about the Dr. Pepper float Brittney made her. You see, my Mom hadn’t had a Dr. Pepper in almost a year and a half because of her dialysis. She decided that day she wanted a Dr. Pepper because now could have whatever she wanted. Brittney walked in the room as mom took her first drink and offered to make her a Dr. Pepper float. My mother beamed! We want to thank UMC for hiring a nurse like Brittney Rosin. She is definitely one in a million and we will always remember her and the specialized care she gave our mom. Sincerely, Shirley Marshall Family

We are proud to honor Brittney Rosin as our November 2020 DAISY Recipient!

Anjelica Mazzolini – October 2020 – The Daisy Award

Please help us congratulate Anjelica Mazzolini as our October 2020 DAISY Nurse!

A patient had arrived that had been with us before and Anjelica realized he was missing his Jazzy motorized scooter. That’s when Anjelica, our Charge Nurse, knew she had to intervene. She immediately called our Director to ask if she would go and retrieve the Jazzy from 7-11. The director called EMS and inquired about which 7-11 they picked up the patient from. After successfully identifying the convenient store, the Director and Assistant Director, who had happily volunteered the services of her truck, embarked on an adventure to ensure this patient had his Jazzy. They lifted the heavy machinery onto the truck by themselves and successfully got it to the hospital. Anjelica noticed immediately that the charger for the scooter was not present. Anjelica took it upon herself to purchase a charger for the scooter so the patient did not have to do without. The best part of this story is that the patient was intubated and sedated. He never asked for any of this help and he will likely never know what these wonderful nurses did for him out of the kindness of their hearts. These ladies deserve recognition for a truly altruistic act!

We are proud to honor Anjelica Mazzolini as our October 2020 DAISY Recipient!

Lindsey Luchsinger – September 2020 – The Daisy Award

As a former employee going through chemo I have been sooo blessed to have the support of my co-workers and managers who have not forgotten me. When I first got sick Lindsey incorporated the help of one of our other co-workers, Alex Monje, to help with jobs in my yard that I could no longer do alone. He was so helpful and caring. Since Alex has been deployed, Lindsey has taken it upon herself and even involved her whole family to make sure I am not overtaxed with yard work or getting groceries during this pandemic. They manicure my yard every two weeks and refuse to take payment from me. She has taken time out of her day to sit outside with me to just visit and maintain distance, and was even able to come with me to have a PICC line inserted, even when she had other family obligations. I wouldn’t have been able to survive the quarantine nor my recovery as well as I have without the help and care Lindsey has provided me. The type of care she has provided me outside of the workplace has shown me the compassion and nursing skills that are desperately needed in the field.

We are proud to honor Lindsey Luchsinger, RN as our September 2020 DAISY Recipient!

Eduard Yatan – August 2020 – The Daisy Award

Eduard went above and beyond for one of the unit’s patients. Eduard was charging and was attempting to coordinate a comfort care patient’s air flight back home. Due to the nature of the patient’s condition the air flight team/company was requiring specialty equipment to be provided to ensure the patient’s safety during transport. This equipment was hard to come by and would have taken days if not weeks to secure, which would have led to a lengthy delay in the patient’s transport back home for comfort care. Eduard took it upon himself to secure the equipment rather than wait for it to process through the insurance in order to help the patient get transferred as soon as possible. Eduard’s kind and giving heart helped the patient be home on comfort care measures with his family as soon as possible.

We are proud to honor Eduard Yatan, BSN, RN as our August 2020 DAISY Recipient!

Clarissa Cantu – July 2020 – Daisy Award

On the night of April 25th, a patient in the Medical ICU was deteriorating quickly. We had reached out several times to find a priest per the family’s request to perform the Anointing of the Sick. As these devastating times have interrupted most of our normalcy we were unsuccessful in our attempt. Clarissa, who overheard about the situation, but was not caring for the patient reached out to the family on her own doing. She offered the support of her own church and priest to the daughter of the patient. At that time, the daughter provided the name and number of the family’s own priest. Despite the chaos of COVID, Clarissa arranged for the priest, the family, and the patient to connect via Facetime. With some technological difficulties, Clarissa was able to configure a set up so the family could be apart of the Anointing of the Sick. She took it upon herself to gown up in full PPE to ensure the patient and the family could have this last special time together. Due to Clarissa’s heroic measures, the family was able to be at peace, and see their mother for the last time. Although the family was not able to be by the patient’s side during this difficult time, Clarissa provided the comfort and support the family needed. Before leaving the patient’s room, Clarissa performed the patient’s last blessing and Sign of the Cross, which is not simply an action, but a prayer in itself.

We are proud to honor Clarissa Cantu, BSN, RN as our July 2020!

Cameron Ray – May 2020 – The Daisy Award

Cameron transferred a patient to my unit. Through the course of Cameron giving 5-star care to the woman, she learned of the patients anxiety over her cat that was left at home without anyone to look after it. The patient had recently moved to a new location so there were keys to be found and codes to be obtained in order to get into the unit. Cameron obtained the keys from the patient in order to go look in on the cat. What Cameron found was that the cat had been crated for a few days, had not had any food or water, and was obviously in distress. Cameron fed and watered the cat and because the patient was going to be hospitalized for a while, she took the cat to her home and provided it with the shelter, food and water that the cat needed. My patient was overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion and the distance that a practical stranger would go to help in such circumstances. Her happiness was expressed in tears and the room was filled with gratitude and love when Cameron updated her on the situation. We should all be so lucky to have such compassion shown to us when we are at our neediest and have nowhere to turn. I’d go as far to say that the stress relief and love shown by Cameron to this patient was worth the amount of medical cure we were able to afford the patient.

We are proud to honor Cameron Ray, BSN, RN as our June 2020 DAISY Award Recipient!

Shelly Forbes – May 2020 – The Daisy Award

Our mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. We met Shelly on the fifth floor where she was moms nurse. Shelly showed so much love to our family and to our mom. Even when released from the fifth floor Shelly went above and beyond, she found where we were and she continued to visit our mom on the other floors bringing her such joy and peace. Mom was sent to a nursing home in Lubbock and when we couldn’t be there Shelly would find a way to go sit with mom. We lost our mom a couple months after being diagnosed with cancer, due to organ failure. Shelly was beside us. She took us to JC Penney and bought our clothes for the funeral. Ms. Shelly is a beautiful angel we love her. We are so thankful and blessed to have had her care for our mom. She went above and beyond. We have never experienced this kind of care and support from any nurse or hospital. Shelly truly is a wonderful lady. We thank God for sending an angel like her.

We are proud to honor Michelle “Shelly” Forbes, RN, PCCN as our May 2020 DAISY Award Recipient!

Mark Padolina – April 2020 – Daisy Award

Mark is very attentive to his patients, family members and their needs, which on this particular day it doesn’t surprise anyone, Mark acted promptly upon learning the family was having issues regarding payment for the prescriptions. The patient had insurance that covered only one of four medication, leaving the rest of the prescriptions to be paid out of pocket. When the pharmacy was ready to collect the form of payment, the mom stated that she did not bring any cash nor a debit card leaving the rest of the prescriptions to be returned and for her to fill it whenever she gets home. It was cold with a snow storm warning on this particular day. Mark did not want for her to go out and drive in that cold weather just to get the other prescriptions filled, so without hesitation, paid for the rest of the prescriptions in which the pediatric patient was to have post-surgery. Asking Mark later about the situation, he replied with that big grin “Being a nurse for over 8 years taught me when you are concerned for the patient and family, you must broaden your perspective beyond yourself and focus your attention in helping that patient/family as much as you can showing compassion and empathy.” Mark is a role model showing us what it is to be truly compassionate thinking of others and not oneself. Mark’s inspiration is contagious making everyone around him excel.

We are proud to honor Mark Padolina, MSN, RN, as our April 2020 DAISY Award Recipient!

Elizabeth Longoria – February 2020 – The Daisy Award

My husband and I are from New Mexico and we flew here to Lubbock. Elizabeth was my husband’s nurse after his wrist surgery. We were told that we would be able to fill his prescriptions there at the hospital before we left back to our hotel. Unfortunately things took a little longer then expected and the pharmacy at the hospital had closed. As my husband and I were talking to Elizabeth about pharmacys that were still open and having to Uber from the hospital to the hotel and then Uber from the hotel to the pharmacy and back to the hotel, Elizabeth asked if it would be ok if she helped us with getting his prescriptions. Her shift was ending soon and my husband was sick from the anesthesia and she said that she wouldn’t mind helping us if we needed it. With my husband very nauseous and being in so much pain I really didn’t want to leave him so we took her up on her offer. She called a pharmacy that took his out of state insurance and called for a prescription for nausea medicine. We gave Elizabeth some money and she also asked if we would like her to pick up some food as well so we didn’t have to leave the hotel. She picked up the prescriptions, soup, crackers and ginger ale. She brought it to us, that way I was able to get my husband back and situated. If it wasn’t for Elizabeth being so kind and helpful to us, I would have had to go out several times at 11:00pm leaving my husband alone in pain and sick. Elizabeth saved us that night and we could not be more grateful to her for all that she did. She is one of the kindest, carrying people I have met. To have a family of her own and still go out of her way to help people she has never met means everything thing to my husband and I. We truly believe she was sent from God that night.

We are proud to honor Elizabeth Longoria, BSN, RN, as our February 2020 DAISY Award Recipient!

Caroline Read – January 2020 – The Daisy Award

We had a homeless patient come in with soiled clothes. Caroline was not the primary nurse but she took it upon herself to wash his clothes. She was unable to get them clean after several cycles in the washing machine so she went and bought him some new clothes and a sweater. After ensuring that the clothes would fit the patient she even took them to be washed, too. This is just one example of how compassionate Caroline is and how much she cares for others.

We are proud to honor Caroline Read, BSN, RN, as our January 2020 DAISY Award Recipient!
